“Where you look affects how you feel.” Brainspotting allows the therapist to assist the client in locating, processing and therefore releasing emotional and bodily-based pain that has been stored in your own “trauma capsule.” When you have been exposed to a traumatic event, especially early in life, the brain will sacrifice itself for survival and encapsulate that traumatic experience and hold it off from rest of the brain so that your conscious mind no longer experiences the emotional pain. Emotional pain creates physical pain and physical pain creates emotional pain. Because your brain is wired for healing, Brainspotting allows you to connect the encapsulated trauma both emotionally and physically in order to promote healing. Therefore, Brainspotting allows you to heal your own “trauma capsule(s)”
David Grand, Ph.D. is an EMDR therapist who discovered and developed Brainspotting. Like EMDR, Brainspotting is very effective in the treatment of traumatic or distressful events. I integrate both EMDR and Brainspotting to help the client heal from past traumatic experiences.
